Parenting

"You can't teach children to be good. The best you can do for your child is to live a good life yourself. What a parent knows and believes, the child will lean on." ~Bruno Bettelheim

As I watch the raising of our grandkiddoes, I'm so grateful for the strong parents that they all have. Daniel and Ben are blessed to have Chris and Tara as their examples. Maya, Mason and Simon are blessed to have Chris and Natalie as their parents and examples.

And from my perspective, there really is nothing better than to watch your children do better than you did. I loved being a mama, but as I look back, I see so many things I could have done better and I love seeing our children doing just that. Better.

These 5 precious little ones have great examples to follow and are being raised with love and guidance, and that makes me happy. I love it that they are in such good hands.

I love that quote, although today it makes me sigh a little bit since it's so hard to be a good example all of the time.

I guess it's a good thing that you don't see my parenting everyday - you might not be so kind about it if you did! :)
You did a great job with your kids - I think that Chris is pretty darn near perfect! It's take an exceptional parent to raise a nearly perfect son! :)

I love that quote! I do believe that example is the best teacher. But it is also the hardest - for sure.

Par for the course. I loved that!

Sorry I have not been in your class I have SO missed it. Last week was Daidys birthday and this week I have had very sick kids, Tyler to be precise. Anyway I hope to make it back next week.

I can't wait to be a grandparent (ok, I CAN wait awhile) but I can't wait to see what kind of mothers my girls become!

Your kids are doing such a great job with THEIR kids BECAUSE you did such a great job with them, and they're just trying to fill your shoes! There's no way I can be the mom my mom or grandma was... but I can sure as heck try! :) Love your thoughts Jan! (Even if I don't always comment, I'm ALWAYS reading them and smiling!) Thank you!

I love your positive blog! How wonderful for your kids and their AWESOME spouses to hear nice things. ONe thing I took from you (I'm sure there are many, but this sticks out) is that you said that you and Mark decided to not just arbitrarily say no to things. Like if your kids wanted friends to spend the night or go to a movie or something, you wouldn't just say no, because YOU didn't want to be bothered, you saved your No's for something important. Robert and I really try to do that too. I think it makes the kids accept No when they know it means something. I"m glad you shared that bit of wisdom with me when I was 14!!!

How true that is. And I love Willow Tree figurines. They're my favorite.

You've done a marvelous job raising your children. Natalie is such a wonderful person! I see how much you two are alike.

I'm pretty sure your children had wonderful examples for parents too, but I know what you mean... it is great to see your children do better than you did.

Fantastic quote. It is comforting and also a gentle reminder to me as a parent and a person practice what I preach, to set a good example. What do you think of the "Y"?

To become such great parents your kids clearly learned from the BEST!

I love that you think your kids are doing better, because I know how good of a job they all know you did. What a great blessing you are to them, in the way that you validate them and encourage them.
