Blast from the Past

Today as I was heading home after an appt. with the eye doc, I turned on a CD in my car and was immediately sucked back in time - -probably 20 years or so. It's amazing to me that music can do that to you. The song? John Denver's "Shanghai Breezes". It was one of my favorites for years. Clearly I haven't listened to that CD in a while. Check it out here.

That made me miss good old JD. I loved him, his folk-y sound, his earth-awareness and his soaring tenor. His voice was clear as a bell, and he would just sail up to those high notes every time -- even when I knew he couldn't do it. He did.

I miss him. I miss Karen Carpenter too. She was a musical hero to me. And with that, suddenly "It's Yesterday Once More." [Richard Carpenter & John Bettis].

"All my best memories come back clearly to me,
Some can even make me cry.
Just like before,
It's yesterday once more". [See and hear a YouTube karaoke version here.]

And now I have utterly dated myself. Which is OK. Music does that to you.

Two of my very most favorite voices (and people) ever. I got sooooo sad watching the JD clip. I've always loved that song. It's sort of melancholy. And that voice? Well, there is just nothing like it. Such a loss. Glad you gave me a JD and a Karen fix today:)

That's the first time I've heard that song and I loved it. Kate sat with me and watched the ENTIRE thing without moving. That's how good it was!

you have to know, good music doesn't get old, and liking it doesn't make you old, either. I was raised on my mom's music, and I LOVE John Denver and the Carpenters and Neil Diamond.

I miss those two. Such great voices! We used to play their records/eight tracks all of the time.

I totally used to make up dances to the carpenter when I was little and put the performance on for my parents. Fun times.

I love how Jori brought up the eight track thing...we too had records and eight tracks of those guys! (there, now I've dated myself too)I also always liked these two! Lance LOVES John Denver! I remember when he was on "The Muppet Show" (John...not Lance)

I love you more every time I read your blog. I can probably sing every song word for word. You could probably join me. We truly should get together and do it. It would be "Almost heaven"...
